The Process

What are VR panoramas?

Virtual Reality Panoramas provide the dynamic viewing potential of video without the prohibitive file size. Essentially, they represent a 360 degree view from a single position.

By manipulating computer controls of the panorama, viewers can look at any part of the 360 degree scene, and zoom in and out to see more detail.

How are they created?

The most common method of creating panoramas is to take a series of overlapping photographs from a stationary tripod.

Overlapping photographs around a central point

These photographs are digitised and stitched together using software like Apple's QuickTime VR Authoring Studio. The result is a rectangular image which has been distorted in such a way that it will give the impression of perspective when viewed as a cylinder.

In the final step, the image is stitched into a cylinder, which takes the form of a QuickTime VR movie. The movie from the above image can be seen on our home page.

Panoramas may be full or partial

A full panorama contains a complete 360 degree cylinder.

A partial panorama, being less than a complete cylinder, has limited horizontal movement.

Examples of full and partial panoramas can be found on our home page and samples page.

Virtual Reality Tours

A VR Tour is a series of panoramas which are linked together. By clicking on "hot spots" in one panorama, you can jump to another.
